What you need to know about LPG gas safety

Cooking with Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) is a joyful experience when you know how to store and use the gas safely. Discover basic tips on storing and using Esso LPG™, including how to conduct an LPG cylinder safety check.

LPG is flammable, but it is a safe choice of cooking fuel when handled with care. Take the following steps to ensure your safety while you’re cooking with LPG:

  • Keep windows open to ventilate your kitchen.
  • Do not place flammable or plastic items near the flame.
  • Turn pan handles away from the flame.
  • Never leave your cooking unattended. The sauce or liquid in your cooking vessel could overflow and extinguish the burners, causing gas to leak.

Follow this simple checklist to ensure that the gas cylinder you receive is untampered with and in good condition.

  • Always order your cylinders from authorised Esso LPG distributors only – our gas suppliers will conduct your LPG delivery and installation in a safe, professional manner.
  • When the cylinder is delivered to your home, look out for a red seal.
  • The seal should be present and intact. Do not accept the cylinder if the seal is broken.

These LPG cylinder storage tips will help you prevent accidental flames, tampering, or leaks.

  • Keep the LPG valve/regulator switched off when gas stove/oven is not in use, especially at night.
  • Store the LPG cylinder in an upright position and away from other combustible and flammable materials.
  • Store no more than one spare LPG cylinder at any given time.
  • Always ventilate your LPG cylinder storage area.
  • Never tamper with your LPG cylinder.
  • Make sure all parts of the installation are in good condition. If you find anything wrong, contact your Esso LPG distributor immediately and ask for assistance.

In Singapore, there are extensive guidelines on storing and handling LPG cylinders safely. For a start, here are a few important rules you need to know.

  • A maximum of 30kg (2 x 15kg cylinders) is permitted to be installed or stored within a private dwelling unit for domestic use.
  • Upon receiving your cylinder, ensure that the LPG distributor conducts the 5-point visual safety check required by the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF):
    • Regulator: Check the regulator to ensure it is not worn out or expired. Replace the regulator if it is more than 10 years from the date of manufacture. Use only regulators with the Safety Mark endorsed by SPRING Singapore affixed onto the regulator itself (instead of the packaging box).
    • Rubber Hose: Examine if the rubber hose is worn out and replace immediately if damaged. Replace with a new set if the hose is more than 5 years from date of manufacture. Use only hoses with the Safety Mark endorsed by SPRING Singapore.
    • Hose Clips: Check the hose clips to ensure that they are in good condition and properly secured (neither loose nor too tightly fitted, which may cause an indent and cut on the hose).
    • Cylinder: Always keep gas cylinders upright and never store them horizontally. Check the cylinder for wear and tear or cracks.
    • Leak Test / Joint Connections: Examine all joint connections between the stove and the LPG cylinder for wear and tear. Check for gas leaks by applying detergent or soap solution on cylinder joints – the appearance of soap bubbles indicates leakage. Do not use an open flame to detect leaks.
